- The AMC identifies four assessment pathways. The Standard pathway is for candidates seeking general registration with an eligible medical degree from an approved institution and qualifying graduation year, and is run by the AMC. The Competent Authority and Specialist pathways require the Medical Board of Australia to confirm eligibility first. Credentials must be verified and an AMC candidate account opened before applying.
- Examinations
- Standard pathway: AMC MCQ Examination, then the AMC Clinical Examination
- Competent Authority pathway: no AMC examination — eligibility confirmed by the Medical Board of Australia
- Specialist pathway: expedited specialist, specialist recognition, or area of need — assessed by the Medical Board
- Short-Term Training in a Medical Specialty pathway: for overseas-trained specialists in temporary training posts

- The AMC carries out primary source verification of medical credentials on every pathway, including those where it sets no examination.
Two bodies, two jobs: the AMC assesses and verifies, the Medical Board of Australia registers. Eligibility questions about the Competent Authority and Specialist pathways are decided by the Board, not the AMC — writing to the wrong one is the commonest delay.
